Meteora Monasteries

Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia and Delphi are famous places of ancient Greece while Meteora was and still is a great religious center and a very important geological phenomenon.

This tour covers the most important ruins of ancient Greece and Byzantine Greece in the Peloponnese and central Greece and gives you the opportunity to see also the Greek country side.


Day 1Epidaurus_Theatre_Greece

You start your Classical Greece Mycenae Olympia Delphi tour early in the morning from the Athens tour terminal or you are picked up from your hotel.  Leave by the Coastal Road to the Corinth Canal (shortstop). Drive on and visit Epidaurus which was a small city in ancient Greece, at the Saronic Gulf. Reputed to be the birthplace of Apollo’s son Asclepius, the healer, Epidaurus was known for its sanctuary, the cult of Asclepius at Epidaurus is attested in the 6th century BC.as well as its theatre, which is once again in use today.
The Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus is a UNESCO world heritage site.
The theatre is marvelled for its exceptional acoustics, which permits almost perfect intelligibility of non-amplified spoken word from the proscenium or scene to all 15,000 spectators, regardless of their seating.
Then proceed to the Town of Nauplion ( shortstop) drive on to Mycenae. and visit the Archaeological Site and the Tomb of Agamemnon. Departure for Olympia Through Central Peloponnese and the Towns of Tripolis and Megalopolis. Dinner and overnight in Olympia, the Cradle of the Olympic Games


Day 2Olympic_Flame_Lighting_Olympia_Greece

Olympia was a sanctuary of ancient Greece, known for having been the site of the Olympic Games in classical times, the most famous games in history. The sanctuary, known as the Altis, consists of an unordered arrangement of various buildings. Enclosed within the temenos are the Temple of Hera (or Heraion/Heraeum) and the Temple of Zeus, the Pelopion and the altar area, where the sacrifices were made. The hippodrome and later stadium were also to the east.
To the north of the sanctuary can be found the Prytaneion and the Philippeion, as well as the array of treasuries representing the various city-states.
Olympia is also known for the gigantic ivory and gold statue of Zeus that used to stand there, sculpted by Pheidias, which was named one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World by Antipater of Sidon.
Then drive on through the plains of Eliad and Achaia until the magnificent bridge crosses the Corinthian Bay from Rion to Antirion. Pass by the picturesque Towns of Nafpactos (Lepanto) and Itea, and arrive in Delphi. Dinner and overnight.


Day 3Delphi_Greece_Tholos_Athina_Pronea

Delphi was the centre of the Ancient World – the “Omphalos” (Navel of Earth) – whose prestige extended far beyond the boundaries of the Hellenic World.
On the slopes of Mount Parnassus, in a landscape of unparalleled beauty and majesty, lie the ruins of the Sanctuary of Apollo Pythios.
Visit the Treasury of the Athenians, the Temple of Apollo and the Museum containing such masterpieces of Ancient Greek sculpture as the bronze Charioteer and the famous athlete Aghias. Depart for Kalambaka, a small town situated at the foot of the astonishing complex of Meteora, gigantic rocks. Dinner and overnight.

 

 


Day 4Meteora_Greece_The_Holy_Monastery_of_Great_Meteoron

Meteora is one of the largest and most important complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos. Among striking scenery, perched on top of huge rocks which seem to be suspended in mid-air, stand ageless Monasteries, where you can see exquisite specimens of Byzantine art. The six monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and the Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The Meteora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Return to Athens via Trikala, Lamia, and Thermopylae (visit Leonida’s monument). Arrive in Athens early in the evening.

Ancient Olympia Greece MONDAY: ATHENS-NAUPLION-OLYMPIA: Leave by the Coastal Road to the Corinth Canal (short stop). Drive on and visit the Theatre of Epidaurus famous for its remarkable acoustics. Then proceed to the Town of Nauplion ( short stop) drive on to Mycenae and visit the Archaeological Site and the Tomb of Agamemnon. Departure for Olympia Through Central Peloponnese and the Towns of Tripolis and Megalopolis. Dinner and overnight in Olympia, the Cradle of the Olympic Games.


TUESDAY: OLYMPIA-DELPHI: In the morning visit the Archaeological Site with theAncient Delphi Greece

Sanctuary of Olympian Zeus, the Ancient Stadium and the Archaeological Museum.

Then drive on through the plains of Eliad and Achaia until the magnificent bridge which is crossing the Corinthian Bay from Rion to Antirion. Pass by the picturesque Towns of Nafpactos (Lepanto) and Itea, arrive in Delphi . Dinner and overnight.


WEDNESDAY: DELPHI-METEORA: Visit the Archaeological site and the Museum of Delphi. Depart for Kalambaka, a small Town situated at the foot of the astonishing complex of Meteora, gigantic rocks. Dinner and overnight.

FRIDAY: ATHENS-MYKONOS: Morning transfer to Piraeus port to embark your s

elected cruise ship. Our cruise ship will leave the port of Piraeus at 11:00 for a 3 full days of fun and experiences. We go along the Athens Riviera in the Saronic Golf to the south end of Attica passing close to the Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounion. This afternoon is a good opportunity to get around and know your ship and the services we provide.
In the afternoon we arrive in Mykonos, the island of the international “jet set”, famous for its beautiful sandy beaches and incredible night life. Take a taste of the island and check if you maybe like to return in the future to spend more time. In the evening return to the ship for overnight travel to our next destination


  SATURDAY: KUSADASI-PATMOS: First port of call is the Turkish port of Kusadasi. Do not miss the opportunity to visit the city of Ephessos . One of the most complete ancient cities ever excavated, where St. Paul was arrested and then banished. In the afternoon arrival to Patmos, where participating in the optional tour, you will have the opportunity to visit the Monastery and the Grotto of St. John, where he lived and recorded the book of the Revelation.


SUNDAY: HERAKLION CRETE-SANTORINI: New port, new places, new interestingSantorini Island Greece

SATURDAY: PIRAEUS (Athens) ON BOARD THE CRUISE SHIP

SUNDAY: AT SEA: Enjoy a full day on board, either relaxing and soaking up the sun, reading a good book from the library, running for a prize with one of the quizzes or learning some new Greek dance steps. Start the evening with your favourite cocktail in one of the lounges of on deck and after a delicious dinner; enjoy an international show time, disco and casino.

MONDAY: PORT SAID (CAIRO)

Early in the morning, we arrive at the port of  Port Said in Egypt.
We will disembark for our optional full-day tour of the Pyramids and Cairo. We cross the desert to Cairo to admire the only remaining intact Wonder of the Ancient World, the Pyramids of Giza. Continue down the valley to gaze at the guardian of this mortuary complex, the mighty Sphinx. After lunch, visit the National Archaeological Museum and acquaint yourself with the treasures of ancient Egypt, spanning a period of over 50 centuries, before re-joining the ship in Port Said.

TUESDAY: ASHDOD

We will spend the whole day in Israel and have the opportunity to visit the Holyland. Participating in an optional tour from the port of Ashdod will take you to the holy city of Jerusalem where you will visit the Mount of Olives, the Church of Gethsemane and in the old city, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Wailing Wall. The tour also includes a visit to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christ.

WEDNESDAY: LIMASSOL

Another port, another country, another civilization. Most of the day we will spend in Limassol, one of the most beautiful cities in Cyprus. Limassol was built between two ancient Greek cities, Amathus and Kourion, and during Byzantine rule, it was known as Neapolis (new town). Limassol’s historical centre is located around its medieval Limassol Castle and the Old Port. Today the city spreads along the Mediterranean coast and has extended much farther than the castle and port, with its suburbs stretching along the coast to Amathus.
You may stroll around the city or participate in the optional tour to Curium and the wine village of Omodos. Curium was an important city-kingdom founded by the Greeks in the 14th century BC. Discover the beautifully preserved Greco-Roman theatre, with spectacular views over the sea and the House of Efstolios, with intricate mosaic floors from the 5th century AD.
Next, it’s into the hills to the wine-growing village of Omodos to visit the Monastery of the Holy Cross in the village square, see a medieval wine press and enjoy a tasting at a local winery in Limassol

THURSDAY: RHODES

Today we visit the magnificent island of the roses, Knights and Butterflies. Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

The optional tour will take you to visit the old medieval city and the famous Acropolis of Lindos and the Citadel of the Knights. Our tour begins with the Acropolis of Lindos, 55 km (40 miles) from the city of Rhodes, to see the graceful Temple of Athena, built-in 300 B.C. Back in the old city of Rhodes, you will walk through D’Amboise Gate and along the perfectly preserved Street of the Knights to discover the medieval residence of each order of the Knights of St John, still bearing the original crests.

FRIDAY: KUSADASI

Kusadas? is a resort town on Turkey’s Aegean coast. In ancient times settlers include the Aeolians in the 11th century BC and Ionians in the 9th century who made Kusadasi a centre of art and culture. In the early years of Christianity. St John the Evangelist and (according to Roman Catholic sacred tradition) Mary (mother of Jesus) both came to live in the area.
The included tour will take you to the ancient Ephesus through the Ages – Hellenistic/Roman.
Visit the archaeological site of ancient Ephesus, one of the largest open-air museums in the world. See incredible relics of the Hellenistic, Roman and early Christian eras. Discover the Agora, the Odeon, the Library of Celsus and the beautifully preserved marble-paved main Street of Kouretes.

SATURDAY: PIRAEUS(ATHENS)

Early we arrive at Piraeus port. This is the end of the 3 continents 5 countries cruise. After breakfast disembarkation and continue for your Greece vacation or your return home trip.
