Nauplion is a moderate size town in the mid eastern Peloponnese. It is located in perfect place on the Gulf of Argolis with its rocky shores and mighty castle looking into calm blue water. Nauplion is divided into two sectors, the old and the new. The old town was the first capital of Greece and many signs still are reminding you of that fact..

The city is like a big picture with the contrast of the ceramic tailed houses, the high rocky castle hills, the clear blue seawaters and Burtzi (the small island just across). The impressing old Venetian fortification (Palamidi) of the city points from long distance to the city and leads all the way from the hill to the top of the city. This castle had eight independent bastions that were linked by hidden passages and walkways. Each one could function on its own if its neighbors were captured. Most of the buildings on the waterfront and the old part of town resemble Venetian style houses.

Nauplion has a commercial and touristy harbor. The long seashore in front of the city calls you for a nice walk during the sunny mornings or the fresh afternoons. The best walk is to go around the hill to admire the beauty of the sea. For the adventurous there is a nice exercise to claim the 999 steps of the Palamidi castle but the less sporty can go up with the car and walk the stairs the way down. T

here is a small beach next to the city and a very nice long beach in Carathonas area on the way to Palamidi. Nauplion is 150km from Athens. Nauplion has several museums and can be your base to explore the Argolis area (Epidaurus, Argos, Mycenae). Many hotels of all classes can accommodate you here on the way to a Peloponnese tour or for a relaxing holiday in the peace and calmness of the city and its hospitable inhabitants ready to show the professionalism in serving tourists. The city if full of nice restaurants and tavernas with Greek specialties and fish dishes.
